What is Income Protection?

What is Income Protection?

Covers you against: Illness or injury
Benefit paid: Regular income
In the event of an accident or sickness income protection insurance pays out a monthly income to cover a proportion of your salary. You decide at the outset how many months before the policy will pay out (the deferment period) and how long it will continue to pay (the benefit period). This can be until you are either well enough to return to work, you reach retirement age or the policy term ends. Income protection insurance provides you with the peace of mind of a regular on-going income that can help you maintain your lifestyle should you fall ill or have an accident and are unable to work.
Income protection is different from critical illness insurance, which pays out a lump sum if you fall seriously ill.
Neither income protection or short-term income protection pays out if you're made redundant.

Why do I need income protection?

Why do I need IP?

Given the low level of state benefits available, everyone of working age should consider income protection.
Millions of us have policies such as private health insurance, gadget insurance , sold to us over the years by salespeople who convinced us we needed protecting. However, while they were right about the protection, they were often wrong about the policies. The one protection policy every working adult in the UK should consider is the very one most of us don't have - income protection.

Do I really need it?

Do I really need it?

According to the ABI, one million workers a year find themselves unable to work due to a serious illness or injury.
It doesn’t matter whether or not you have children or other dependants – if illness would mean you couldn’t pay the bills, you should consider income protection insurance.
You’re most likely to need it if you’re self-employed or employed and you don’t have sick pay to fall back on.
If you're employed it might be best to check what your employer will provide for you if you’re off sick.

You might not need income protection insurance if:

You could get by on your sick pay.
You could survive on government benefits
You have enough savings to support yourself
Your partner or family would support you
